چکیده

A one-way wave equation is a partial differential equation which, in some approximate sense, behaves like the wave equation in one direction but permits no propagation in the opposite one. Such equations are used in geophysics, in underwater acoustics, and as numerical "absorbing boundary conditions". Their construction can be reduced to the approximation of vl s2 on [-1,1] by a rational function r(s) = pm(s)/q„(s). This paper characterizes those rational functions r for which the corresponding one-way wave equation is well posed, both as a partial differential equation and as an absorbing boundary condition for the wave equation. We find that if r(s) interpolates y\ s2 at sufficiently many points in (-1,1), then well-posedness is assured. It follows that absorbing boundary conditions based on Padé approximation are well posed if and only if (m,n) lies in one of two distinct diagonals in the Padé table, the two proposed by Engquist and Majda. Analogous results also hold for one-way wave equations derived by Chebyshev or least-squares approximation.

Wide-angle one-way wave equations.

A one-way wave equation, also known as a paraxial or parabolic wave equation, is a differential equation that permits wave propagation in certain directions only. Such equations are used regularly in underwater acoustics, in geophysics, and as energy-absorbing numerical boundary conditions. The design of a one-way wave equation is connected with the approximation of (1-s2)1/2 on [-1,1] by a rat...

Absorbing Boundary Conditions for the Schrödinger Equation

A large number of differential equation problems which admit traveling waves are usually defined on very large or infinite domains. To numerically solve these problems on smaller subdomains of the original domain, artificial boundary conditions must be defined for these subdomains. One type of artificial boundary condition which can minimize the size of such subdomains is the absorbing boundary...

Rational approximations to l/v/1 - s 2, one-way wave equations and absorbing boundary conditions

One-way wave equations (OWWEs), derived from rational approximations, C(s) to I/x/1 S 2, are considered. Absorbing boundary conditions obtained from these OWWEs are easily implemented, producing systems of differential equations at the boundary which are different from those produced by rational approximations, r(s) to x/1 s 2. Although these systems are different, a particular choice of differ...

Oscillating water column (OWC) is one of the wave energy converting devices available. In this article, a numerical model has been introduced to simulate wave interaction with OWC in one dimensional plane. Mild slope equations have been used in one dimension. The pressure and water elevation inside OWC have been calculated using an iterative method. Also an absorbing boundary is used at the beg...
